THE ISSUE

Frequent, reliable, and affordable public transport has never been more essential, especially since Hobart now ranks as the fourth most congested city in the country.  

Yet Tasmania’s transport system is being starved of funding, leading to service cuts, declining reliability, and a loss of public confidence in Metro Tasmania.

Instead of fixing the crisis, the Liberal Government has floated the idea of privatising public assets, like Metro Tas - a move that would only make things worse.

Tasmanians deserve a functional public transport system equal to those in mainland states - one that is safe, reliable, and there for everyone. Tasmanians shouldn’t settle for less!

OUR PLEDGE

During this election, the RTBU will be asking candidates across Tassie to commit to three simple things: 

1. Rule out any form of public transport privatisation — now and in the future
2. Preserve existing rail corridors for future transport use
3. Invest in a strong, publicly owned transport network, such as light rail, that keeps our communities connected.

This election can be a critical turning point for public transport, and the RTBU is calling on candidates to deliver change.
