The state government’s legislation to bring Western Australia’s 5,500km freight rail network back into public hands is a historic victory for public accountability, fair wages and high safety standards across the rail industry, the RTBU said.
The Rail Freight System (Acquisition and Reorganisation) Bill 2026 is a critical first step towards returning WA’s vital freight rail network back to public ownership.
The legislation, which is being introduced to parliament today, will pave the way for the state government to reacquire the 5,500-kilometre Arc Infrastructure network, which was privatised in 2000.
RTBU National Secretary Alex Claassens said returning the freight network to public control prioritises long-term planning and community benefit over private profits.
“A public system allows for a vertically integrated network which takes competition away from the private sector and delivers the best outcomes for the rail industry,” Mr Claassens said.
“Our supply chains have been fragmented by privatisation for too long, and a publicly owned and operated freight rail system in WA will ensure it is managed in the public interest.
“Reversing the failed 2000 privatisation of the Arc Infrastructure network will make it easier and safer to shift even more freight off our roads and onto rail.”
RTBU WA Branch Secretary Josh Dekuyer said bringing the network into public hands is the only way to rebuild a safe, reliable and efficient system that serves workers and the community.
“We have seen time and time again what privatisation does to essential transport networks - failing to deliver on promises which leads to underinvestment, insecure contracts and reduced accountability,” Mr Dekuyer said.
“Public ownership means taxpayer dollars are reinvested into local services rather than being siphoned off as private corporate profits.
“It means fair wages, better training and higher safety standards for rail workers and delivers a more resilient supply chain for the state’s industries.”
